Need Help? Watch this video: How to Make a Submission

Welcome to the submissions portal for DEEP WILD: Writing from the Backcountry

The mission of DEEP WILD is to provide a forum for the best writing we can find that conjures the experiences, observations, and insights of backcountry journeys. By “backcountry,” we mean AWAY FROM PAVED ROADS, PREFERABLY MORE THAN A DAY'S JOURNEY by foot, skis, snowshoes, kayak, horse, or any other non-motorized means of conveyance. We are open to a wide spectrum of work, from the personal to the political.

DEEP WILD: Writing from the Backcountry will be published twice yearly in portable, pocket-sized editions. Selections may also be published on our website in addition to the physical publication.

We are currently accepting submissions of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction for the inaugural issue, to be published in Summer 2019.

DEADLINE: March 15, 2019

We are open to a wide spectrum of carefully-crafted work. We invite you to send three to five poems or one or more prose pieces (creative nonfiction or fiction), up to about 3,000 words. Think minimalist! Your words will literally be ink on a page in a backpack for some readers. Make them worth their weight!

FOR FULL GUIDELINES, BE SURE TO VISIT OUR SUBMISSIONS PAGE at https://www.deepwildjournal.com/submissions/

TO SUBMIT, follow these simple steps:
1. Click "Signup" and create a user account for Green Submissions.
2. Log in, click "Make a New Submission," and go to the specific category—poetry, creative nonfiction, or fiction. Follow the instructions you will see there.

Green Submissions gives two options for submission, to Enter a Plain Text Submission or Upload a Formatted File. The Plain Text Submission creates problems by removing all formatting; please do not use it. Instead, PLEASE CHOOSE THE SECOND OPTION AND UPLOAD YOUR WORK IN A .PDF OR WORD FORMAT.

AFTER SUBMITTING, you may get emails about a "change in notification status." These emails simply mean that your work is being routed through our system to the proper editor.

Note that you can also "Check Your Submission Status" and "Withdraw a Submission" on the Green Submissions site, and that you can view the video "How to Make a Submission" by clicking on the link at the top of this page.

If you have any issues using Green Submissions, you can also submit directly by emailing Submissions@deepwildjournal.com. Submissions using this method must be clearly designated as Poetry, Fiction, or Nonfiction in the email’s subject line.

We look forward to reading your work!
