Need Help? Watch this video: How to Make a Submission

Welcome to the submissions portal for DEEP WILD: Writing from the Backcountry

The mission of DEEP WILD is to provide a forum for the best writing we can find that conjures the experiences, observations, and insights of backcountry journeys. By “backcountry,” we mean AWAY FROM PAVED ROADS, PREFERABLY MORE THAN A DAY'S JOURNEY by foot, skis, snowshoes, kayak, horse, or any other non-motorized means of conveyance. We are open to a wide spectrum of work, from the personal to the political.

SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED for the inaugural issue of Deep Wild Journal. For updates on future calls for submissions and other Deep Wild news, please like us on Facebook, or subscribe to the Deep Wild blog or to our Twitter feed @deepwildjournal.

We anticipate that the first issue of Deep Wild: Writing from the Backcountry will be released in late summer.

A FEW NOTES FOR THOSE WHO HAVE SENT US WORK FOR ISSUE ONE:
• Thank you for thinking of us. We have received work from writers all around the United States and from many other countries as well. We value your interest and your input, and are committed to giving our close attention to all the work we received.
• Response time: We will strive to respond to all submissions within six weeks after our submissions window closes. If you do not hear from us after that time, feel free to query at submissions@deepwildjournal.com
• Please let us know at once if your work is accepted elsewhere and is no longer available. You may withdraw your work on the Green Submissions website or via email at submissions@deepwildjournal.com.
• If your work is selected, we ask for the right to publish it in our print journal and also possibly on-line. You retain of course all rights to your work. If it has been previously published, you will be asked to provide proof of permission.
• Payment: Contributors will receive one copy of the journal in which their work appears, and a 40% discount on additional copies.
• About Green Submissions. Please note that you may occasionally receive an automated email announcing “change of status” of your manuscript. This simply indicates that your submission is working its way through our system. The Green Submissions platform may not be as user-friendly as Submittable, but it is free to use, which translates to no-fee submissions for you. That’s the way we like it!
